Unfortunately, in Warsaw we do have too many pompous monuments (and, what is worse, still there are ideas to put new ones, often of poor quality) and too few different 'light' forms in public space, such as modern sculptures or various installations. And that is a pity, because, thanks to such objects the city could become more attractive and simply happier. Luckily, there are some exceptions from that rule. Probably the first bigger action of 'cheering up' the city space was the Cow Parade (unfortunately it was only temporary), later also deers on Powisle appeared and Pegasuses at Krasinskich Square. Lately also the Golem joined them. It stands in Pole Mokotowskie Park since September 2009.

The idea of CosmoGolem refers to a legendary character of Golem, but in contrast to its original it is not made of clay, only of wood. It is about 3 metres high and it looks quite well in the middle of a field in northern part of Pole Mokotowskie park, which was previously an empty space. The Golem was designed by Belgian artist Koen Vanmechelen. Similar sculptures also stands in a few other cities, mostly in Belgium.

But the Golem is not only a piece of modern art. The aim of its construction was not only to vary the public space. He is also meant to be a special defender of helpless children, the foundation "Dzieci Niczyje" ("No-one's children"), which had its contribution in the construction of the Golem, organises various actions in its surrounding. Their aim is to bring attention and inform about children's rights.

And, what is more, kids can also turn to the Golem directly: there is a possibility to throw a wish written on a piece of paper to his interior. Actually, it is not guarantied directly that this wish will come true :) but the authors of the project assure at least, that nobody will take them out, they will be safe in Golem's care. And, who knows, maybe adults can also try to throw their wish there :)
